‘He will not stay…,’ former India batter Aakash Chopra on Rohit Sharma’s future with Mumbai Indians
Former India opener Aakash Chopra thinks that India skipper Rohit Sharma will leave Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Mumbai Indians ahead of the upcoming mega auction.
The December auction requires a franchise to retain only a handful of players and all the other names go in the pool.
The question of Rohit's departure has been doing rounds ever since he was removed as skipper last season for Hardik Pandya. Rohit then led India to T20 World Cup after the IPL 2024 while MI had one of their worst seasons under Hardik.
"Will he stay or will he go? It's a big question.
Personally, I feel '. Whoever is retained will be with the thinking that he will remain with you for three years, unless your name is MS Dhoni. MS Dhoni and Chennai Super Kings' story is very different but Rohit Sharma at MI, I feel he might himself leave or MI might leave him," Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
After the World Cup win, Rohit announced his retirement from the shortest format, and another MI player, Suryakumar Yadav, replaced him as the India skipper.
With Hardik's poor season as MI skipper and him not being selected for India captain role, his captaincy at MI might also get under scrutiny.
"Anything can happen but I don't think Rohit is going to be retained here. I don't have any information but I feel Rohit will probably be released. He might go to someone in the trade window, that's a possibility that he doesn't go to the auction, but if that doesn't happen, he might be seen in the auction. I feel his journey with the Mumbai Indians is over," Chopra added.
As of now, a franchise can retain up to three players but the franchises have met regarding this and the final number is still be to announced before the auction takes place.
