Thala fans may soon witness MS Dhoni in the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) jersey for yet another season, thanks to a potential rule change by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
According to reports from Cricbuzz, the BCCI is reportedly considering reintroducing an old policy that could allow retired international cricketers to participate in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as 'uncapped' players, provided they have been retired for at least five years. This rule was last seen in action before 2021 but could make a comeback for the 2025 season.
If this policy is reinstated, it could directly impact Dhoni's future with CSK. The legendary captain, who retired from international cricket in 2020, would qualify as an uncapped player under the rule. This would enable CSK to retain him at a significantly reduced cost of INR 4 crore, compared to his previous retention fee of INR 12 crore. The move would provide financial flexibility to the franchise while allowing them to retain one of the most iconic players in IPL history.
Cricbuzz further say, regardless of the BCCI's final decision on the retention policy, CSK is prepared to retain Dhoni, as he remains the franchise's top priority.

This policy shift, if enacted, could also benefit other retired players like Sunil Narine, enhancing the IPL's appeal by bringing back beloved cricketers. It would allow franchises to retain players at lower costs, injecting fresh excitement into the tournament for both fans and teams.
His commitment to CSK, however, has never wavered. Even while recovering from a knee injury, Dhoni led CSK to a fifth IPL title in 2023 before stepping down as captain.

Following successful knee surgery, he returned to training for the 2024 season, where he continued to contribute with crucial cameo roles. Ultimately, Dhoni's decision to extend his IPL career will determine whether fans get to see him in CSK colors in 2025.
If the BCCI reintroduces this policy, it could pave the way for Thala to thrill fans for at least one more season.
