His ability to remain calm, combined with his brilliant cricketing mind, has led him to achieve unprecedented success, including being the only captain to have won all three ICC white-ball trophies: the T20 World Cup in 2007, the Cricket World Cup in 2011, and the Champions Trophy in 2013.
Additionally, Dhoni has led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to a record-equalling five Indian Premier League (IPL) titles, further solidifying his legacy as a remarkable leader.
However, a lesser-known side of Dhoni was recently revealed by his former India and CSK teammate, Subramaniam Badrinath. In a conversation with InsideSport, Badrinath shared a rare moment when the otherwise composed Dhoni lost his cool, an occurrence that hardly ever happened on or off the field.
Recalling the incident, Badrinath said, "He is also a human... he has lost his cool. But that has never happened on the field.
He would never let the opposition know that he had lost his cool."
The match in question was against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Chennai, where CSK was chasing a modest target of around 110 runs. However, things took a turn for the worse as CSK lost wickets in heaps, and eventually lost the match as well.
Badrinath explained the incident, adding, "I got out to a lap shot against Anil Kumble. I was LBW. So, I was standing inside the dressing room, and he [Dhoni] was coming inside, where there was a small water bottle. MS just kicked it out of the park. We all just couldn't make eye contact with him."
Dhoni's Future in IPL Uncertain Amid Retirement Speculation
As the IPL mega auction soon approaches, questions surrounding Dhoni's future in the tournament have intensified.
While Dhoni retired from international cricket in August 2020, his participation in the IPL remains uncertain. The 43-year-old has not spoken about whether he will play in IPL 2025, leaving fans in suspense once again.
With a mega auction ahead of the next IPL season, CSK faces a dilemma regarding Dhoni's retention. While retaining the legendary captain could fill a valuable slot in their squad, letting go of the man who led them to five IPL titles is not an easy decision.
CSK would certainly prefer to keep Dhoni associated with the franchise, even if in a non-playing capacity, as they head into the upcoming auction and plan for the future.
As the cricketing world waits to see what Dhoni decides, his legacy as both a player and captain remains untouched, with stories like the one shared by Badrinath only adding to the legend of 'Captain Cool.'
