New Delhi: The Indian cricket team is gearing up to return to action next week with the first Test of the two-match series against Bangladesh in Chennai after a 45-day hiatus.
The Rohit Sharma-led team assembled in the city on Friday, where new head coach Gautam Gambhir oversaw a training session at the fabled MA Chidambaram Stadium. The series will be Gambhir's maiden Test assignment since he replaced Rahul Dravid as the chief coach in July.
India have so far played 579 matches since their inaugural appearance in 1932, winning 178 and losing an equal amount while 222 games ended in draws. If India defeats Bangladesh in Chennai, this would be a massive milestone that comes their way for the Rohit Sharma-led team. Such a win would give India their 179th Test win and would mean that they would have won one more Test than they have lost for the first time since their entry into Test cricket way back in 1932. Rahul Dravid's final series as head coach witnessed India dominate England with a 4-1 victory earlier this year.
Notably, star batter Virat Kohli missed the series to be with his family following the birth of his son, Akaay. Crucial WTC points will be up for grabs when India gears up for an arduous 10-match Test season starting with the two-match series. The period includes a three-Test home series against New Zealand and the high-profile five-match Border-Gavaskar series in Australia later this year. India currently sit atop the World Test Championship table with 68.52 percentage points, while Australia closely follows in second place with 62.50 percentage points. Bangladesh have surged to the fourth spot in the World Test Championship standings with 45.83 percentage points after their dominating 10-wicket win over Pakistan in the opening Test.
A remarkable fightback in the second Test, led by a century from wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das, sealed a series sweep for the side. The second Test of the series is scheduled to take place at Green Park, Kanpur, starting September 27. Indian squad for first Test against Bangladesh: Rohit Sharma (C), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Sarfaraz Khan, Rishabh Pant (WK), Dhruv Jurel (WK), R Ashwin, R Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohd.
Siraj, Akash Deep, Jasprit Bumrah, and Yash Dayal
