In the press conference ahead of the Chennai Test, head coach Gambhir asserted that players from his team aren't dropped, instead a playing eleven to win a match for India is selected.
The former India opener added that Dhruv Jurel will have to sit out as Rishabh Pant returns to Test cricket after almost 21 months.
Gambhir added that likewise young Sarfaraz Khan will also have to make room for a senior batter.
"We don't drop anyone. We just pick the players who fit the XI. We believe in selecting the XI. Jurel is a phenomenal player but when Pant is coming in, sometimes people have to wait. Same with Sarfaraz. There will be opportunities and you have to wait," Gambhir said.
"We all know how destructive Pant can be and what he has done. Not many of his age have done it across conditions.
With batting and behind the stumps he has been phenomenal. His batting overshadows his keeping especially against the spinners," the 42-year-old further added.
KL Rahul, who missed the last four Tests of the five-match series against England due to an injury earlier this year, is set to replace Sarfaraz Khan in the India playing eleven.
That means that captain Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant will occupy the first six places in India's playing eleven for the first Test. They will very likely be followed by Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Axar Patel and two pacers - Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.
There can be a likely toss up between Axar and Kuldeep Yadav, but the former might get an opportunity if India aim to have a batting depth in their first Test match since March.
Akash Deep and uncapped Yash Dayal are the other two pacers in the 15-member India squad for the series-opener against Bangladesh.
