After the Betway SA20 Auctions 2024 in Cape Town earlier in the week, Sangakkara, a former Sri Lankan cricket star and now Director of Cricket for Rajasthan Royals, shared his thoughts on the auction's outcome for the Paarl Royals.
He expressed satisfaction with their player selections, stating they secured their top choices.
Sangakkara praised Graeme Smith's leadership during the auction and noted that all teams seemed pleased with the process.
Replacing Buttler with two players
Sangakkara explained how Paarl Royals opted to sign former India wicketkeeper-batter Karthik and England batter Joe Root to fill in the void left by Jos Buttler ahead of the SA20 2025 season.
Sangakkara highlighted the significance of Joe Root and Dinesh Karthik joining the team as replacements for Jos Buttler.
He mentioned Root's wealth of experience and his ability to connect with teammates, which he witnessed during Root's time in the IPL.
Sangakkara also praised Karthik as one of T20 cricket's best finishers, emphasizing his explosive capabilities at crucial moments, saying, "With Jos leaving, who typically excels at the top, we've managed to split that responsibility between two different players, both equally capable and devastating. I think we've got a better balance than we had last time."
Focus on Young Talent
Discussing young South African talents like Kwena Maphaka in the squad, Sangakkara stressed nurturing youth.
He mentioned Lhuan-dre Pretorius as another promising player. The goal is not only to win but also to develop players who can benefit both their team and the national side. This philosophy mirrors their approach in the IPL, where they focus on player development for broader benefits.
Sangakkara addressed team balance post-auction, noting that they have achieved a good equilibrium. He emphasized monitoring future tours and player availability to reduce risks and manage volatility. The aim is to have a flexible squad ready to adapt to any sudden changes in international schedules or unexpected cricket events.
Performance Goals
The Paarl Royals reached playoffs in both seasons, but Sangakkara discussed what they need to advance further.
He emphasized recognizing key moments and performing under pressure. With David Miller as captain and a strong South African contingent, he believes mental resilience and adaptability are crucial for success.
Regarding his former teammate Mahela Jayawardene from MI Cape Town, Sangakkara commented on competitiveness between them. Although neither coaches in the SA T20 league now, he acknowledged that competitive spirit remains from their international sports days.
They enjoy some friendly banter but ultimately leave it to players to compete on the field.
Sangakkara concluded by expressing confidence in their preparations this year compared to previous ones. He believes they are better equipped to seize critical moments and convert opportunities into victories this season.
