Gary Kirsten has resigned as Pakistan’s white-ball coach after six months. This development came on the day Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced Mohammed Rizwan as the Men in Green’s new ODI and T20I captain.
Kirsten and Jason Gillespie joined the national team as white-ball and Test cricket coaches. The former Australia pacer has now taken charge of the Pakistan team for the upcoming tour of Australia, during which the team will play three ODIs and three T20Is.
According to a report by Cricket Pakistan, Kirsten’s departure is due to Babar Azam’s non-selection for the tour of Zimbabwe.
Kirsten and Gillespie wanted Babar to play in Zimbabwe to get him used to the conditions for the Test series against South Africa. However, the new selection committee didn’t listen.
Kirsten had planned for the Champions ODI Cup and the tours of Australia and Zimbabwe with the players. Still, the selectors brought significant changes to the team despite Gary’s firm stand against it.
PCB added new members to the selection panel after Pakistan lost the first Test against England.
Aleen Dar, Aaqib Javed, and Azhar Ali were inducted, and they took over the voting powers of the coaches and captains.
When Kirsten joined the team, he was told that he would have control over selection matters, but the change in stance angered him. He never coached Pakistan in the fifty-over format.
