Shubman Gill was reportedly being asked to enter the IPL 2025 Mega Auction next month, but the star India batter has remained "loyal" and wants to rebuild at Gujarat Titans as the captain of the side for the second season on the trot.
Gill was appointed skipper ahead of IPL 2024 after Hardik Pandya, GT's title-winning captain, decided to part ways via a trade to Mumbai Indians on the retention deadline day last season. A year on from losing their skipper, Titans could have lost another, but Gill is likely to be Gujarat Titans top retention alongside Afghanistan's in-demand spinner Rashid Khan, who is likely to continue as the vice captain of the side. According to a report in ANI, GT will retain both Gill and Rashid ahead of the IPL retention 2025 deadline day, which is set to be on Thursday (October 31). Gill in fact wants to overlook the strong rebuild during next month's auction. "Shubman Gill to lead the Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025, and Rashid Khan will play under him. Many big teams were eyeing him and were looking to have him in auction. Gill wants to stay loyal to GT and build a strong team," GT sources told ANI. Titans won the IPL title in their maiden appearance in 2022, and finished runners up in their second season, losing the final by a whisker against MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings in 2023. In 2024, the franchise failed to qualify for the playoffs, finishing 8th in the points table. Gujarat Titans now want to build a strong team in their quest to lift the coveted IPL trophy once again, starting with the retention of their skipper Gill, and potentially Rashid, who has also been asked to enter the auction by one particular franchise. Gill, who announced his arrival at Kolkata Knight Riders, was drafted in by the Titans ahead of the IPL 2022 Mega Auction for Rs 8 Crore. The Punjab batter is expected to fetch bigger price this term as he will be GT's top retention. Released by Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rashid also was drafted in by GT before the IPL 2022 auction at Rs 15 Crore, the joint highest slab alongside Hardik. If retained by GT, Rashid and Shubman are expected to be retained at top slab of Rs 18 Crore. Apart from Rashid and Gill, GT could also look at South Africa batter David Miller as another retention as the Protea southpaw could be on many teams radar and may fetch a bigger fee at the auction. The 2022 champions will also look at young Indian batter Sai Sudharsan as one of the Right to Match (RTM) options at the IPL 2025 Mega Auction. The franchise could take a similar route for Indian pacer Mohammed Shami depending on his fitness. Shami could even be retained if completely fit. Then there is also an option of retaining Mohit Sharma at Rs 4 Crore after the Indian pacer will be considered uncapped, having not played international cricket for more than 5 years. As it stands, Gill is the only sure shot retention for Gujarat Titans. The rest, if any, will be confirmed on the IPL 2025 Retention deadline day, which is just under two days now.
