Amid the potential departure of captain Shreyas Iyer, the Kolkata Knight Riders are lining up for the next leadership heir ahead of the IPL 2025.
With the retention deadline closing in, the Knight Riders are expected to retain some of their star players from last season. Sunil Narine is likely to be an obvious choice, but captain Shreyas Iyer's participation in the Purple and Blue next season is still in doubt. As per reports, KKR have started a negotiation with Iyer but the batter is yet to be tied in by the franchise. Amid this, there is a staggering report that claims Rinku Singh may step in as the Kolkata Knight Riders captain. Shah Rukh Khan, the Bollywood superstar and co-owner of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), has plans for a significant change in the team's leadership by the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. He intends to appoint Rinku Singh as the captain, a decision reflecting a strategic vision for the franchise's future. Singh's journey with KKR has been nothing short of inspirational, overcoming initial hurdles to become an indispensable member of the squad. The southpaw has crossed many hurdles and has cemented his status as an indispensable part of the KKR squad over the last two years. The outstanding outings in IPL earned Rinku a place in the India side, and now a captaincy opportunity is reportedly on the horizon. "SRK wants Rinku to be his team's captain. It also depends on the thought process of the team management," a report from CricBlogger said on Tuesday. KKR ended their decade-long trophy drought by winning the IPL in 2024, and will be desperate to continue with most of their key players. Rinku Singh, being a key player in the team, is set to be retained. But the southpaw's prospects of captaining KKR will be massive for both the player and the franchise. If the KKR owner Shah Rukh Khan bats for Rinku's captaincy, they may flirt with a huge risk given the India player has no prior captaincy experience.
