The series opener in Bengaluru had a seaming wicket and the next two Test matches in Pune and Mumbai had turning tracks. India's batting crumbled like a pack of cards in all the three Test matches.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in particular have been in the midst of the storm. India's top two superstars looked lightyears away from their best and couldn't even cross the 100-run mark in the series. After the match, Rohit Sharma admitted that he couldn't live up to the expectations both with the bat and his captaincy. India's series loss against New Zealand has also resulted in Rohit Sharma registering an unwanted record as the skipper of the side.
Rohit Sharma' Horror Home Season
Rohit Sharma will look to completely forget his 2024 home season. The Indian batting stalwart could amass only 133 runs from 10 innings and averaged just 13.3. This is the lowest average for an Indian captain. This record was earlier held by Sunil Gavaskar who averaged only 17.5 from eight games in 1984-85 season. But that's not all. Rohit Sharma's average of 13.3 is the second-lowest among all captains at home in Test cricket history.
Sharma is only behind English captain Nasser Hussain who averaged only 10.22 in 2000 during England's home season. Hussain, as the skipper of England scored only 92 runs from his 10 innings.
List of players having lowest home season averages

India's WTC Final Qualification Hopes Dented
Before the start of the New Zealand series, India needed only 3 wins from their remaining eight matches. But the New Zealand series culminated into a horror show for Rohit Sharma and his men and after their 3-0 series defeat, India now need 4 wins from their remaining five games that they are scheduled to play against Australia, in Australia. Unfortunately, even if India win 4 matches, they are not guaranteed a berth in the World Test Championship 2024 Final.
