Dinesh Karthik, who donned the wicketkeeping gloves for the past few seasons, retired from the game post the IPL 2024 season and has taken over mentorship as well as batting coach role with the Bengaluru-based franchise.
Having released Anuj Rawat, the other wicketkeeper in the 2024 squad, RCB will be keen to fill the wicketkeeper slot at the upcoming big IPL auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. All 10 teams will be locked in bidding wars during the 2-day auction.
Teams will be spoilt for choices when it comes to wicketkeeping options with capped Indian wicketkeepers Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan and Jitesh Sharma entering the auction. But, to land them will be a tough task as other teams will also be eager to buy these players.
RCB will definitely prioritize Indian wicketkeepers, especially Pant and Rahul, but if they do fail in their attempt to land these two, the Bengaluru-based outfit can look at some of the overseas options as their wicketkeeper targets. Here is a look at five players who Royal Challengers can bid for at the IPL Mega Auction:
5 Overseas Wicketkeepers RCB Can Target in IPL 2025 Auction
1. Josh Inglis: The Australian wicketkeeper-batter could be the perfect replacement for some Karthik due to his ability to bat anywhere in the order. His finishing ability will be a big aspect, which RCB will lack in the absence of DK.
The 29-year-old, who has never played in the IPL earlier, has enough T20 experience, having played for the Australian national team and across other leagues, including the Big Bash League (BBL) and most recently the Major League Cricket (MLC) in USA.
In 26 T20Is, Inglis has scored 679 runs, including 2 centuries, at a strike rate of 160.14. In the BBL, the right-handed wicketkeeper-batter has amassed 1747 runs, including 14 fifties, striking at 140.54 representing the Perth Scorchers.
2. Phil Salt: The England wicketkeeper-batter has showed his worth in the IPL earlier, turning up for the Delhi Capitals in 2023, and the champions Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024. Although he doesn't keep wickets for England, Salt dons the gloves for his league teams, and provides an opening option.
The 28-year-old, who recently scored his third T20I century, will attract bids from most teams, including KKR. In 34 T20Is, Salt has scored 1047 runs, including 3 centuries, at a strike rate of 167.52. The Englishman would be a good partner to Kohli as opener for RCB.
3. Quinton de Kock: The South African has previously played for the Royal Challengers, and would be an ideal choice as a left-handed opening partner to Kohli. Like Salt, De Kock also will garner a lot of interest thanks to his exploits in the IPL with several teams.
De Kock was with the Lucknow Super Giants recently, but was released as the franchise opted to retain Nicholas Pooran as their wicketkeeping option. RCB would be a good destination for the Protea, but his other former team - Mumbai Indians - could also be in for him.
4. Jos Buttler: The England white-ball skipper will be one of the top draws at the auction, having been released by Rajasthan Royals. His numbers in the format, especially in the IPL in the past three to four seasons, is tremendous, making Buttler the most sought after player.
Buttler and his compatriot Salt are expected to trigger bidding wars during the upcoming two-day auction. The England captain is also an opening option and could be a good fit for RCB. He has 7 hundreds to his name in the IPL. The right-handed batter will also be in the wishlist of many other teams.
5. Ryan Rickelton: The South African wicketkeeper will be the most attainable option among quality stumpers who can open the batting in the shortest format. As a left-hander, he will provide the perfect combo batting alongside Kohli at RCB.
His inexperience of playing in India, however, may be the only factor that could see him miss out on landing a deal in the IPL. But his T20 numbers are too good to ignore. Rickelton has scored 2675 runs in 103 matches in the shortest format, striking at 138.31. He has hit 82 sixes in T20s in 2024.
