A PTI report states that Shami is still not fully fit. Shami was out of action for the last one year due to an ankle injury suffered during the World Cup last year. Shami, who went through long rehabilitation after his surgery, again had to face the problem of swelling in his knee. Although he made a comeback from Ranji Trophy and then Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy only last month and has been playing continuously since then, his fitness is still under question.

In the report, quoting sources, it has been said that the swelling in Shami's knee is coming and going again and again. Now in such a situation, apparently he has not been able to get the fitness certificate from the National Cricket Academy. In the report, BCCI source has also claimed that Shami himself is not confident about his fitness and he is accepting that at present he will not be able to bear the burden of bowling continuously in Test cricket. In such a situation, Shami wants to spend more time in domestic cricket only.

Bengal Cricket Association has included him in the squad for the tournament. In the last one month, after one match of Ranji Trophy, Shami has played 9 consecutive matches in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament. During this period their performance was better but in the quarter-finals they were beaten badly against Baroda and the team was out of the tournament.
