Aakash Chopra has reacted to Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri’s statements that Rohit Sharma should return to open the innings in the third Test against Australia in Brisbane. He feels making changes on the basis of the previous game is not the right way to move forward.

The Brisbane Test will start on Saturday, December 14. Rohit batted at the No.6 slot in the second contest to allow KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal to continue as openers. The move was not successful, as the captain managed just 9 runs across both innings.

“Where will Rohit Sharma bat in the third Test? I read what Ravi Shastri and Sunil Gavaskar said about Rohit’s batting position. They want him to return as opener as the experiment with Rahul and Jaiswal is over,” Aakash Chopra said.

Chopra mentioned that Rohit should have opened in Adelaide also if that is his right position.

“He is the captain and ahs been your most successful opener since started opening the batting in Test. There is no doubt about that. However, if he is going to play as an opener, he could have done that in the pink-ball Test too,” he added.

“There is no rule that you should do things in accordance to what happened in the last game. If you do that, changes will start happening in every match. You took a call on something and it worked in the first Test. But it didn’t in the second game and you feel the need to change it in the third game. You can’t take things like that.”

Rahul and Jaiswal had added 201 runs for the first wicket in the second innings of the series opener, but they managed just 12 runs as a pair across both innings at the Adelaide Oval.

Aakash Chopra wants Rohit Sharma to bat in the middle order.
