Shreyas Iyer etched his name into the history books on Sunday, 15th November, by achieving a massive record, where he is the first person ever to do so.
Iyer-led Mumbai crossed swords with Rajat Patidar's Madhya Pradesh in the summit clash of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024 and the former emerged victorious by 5 wickets, chasing down a challenging target of 175.
One Of A Kind
Along with the SMAT 2024 trophy, as well as the Indian Premier League (IPL) title, the 30-year-old Iyer became the only cricketer in the world to win both the trophies as captain in the same calendar year. He was instrumental earlier this year, where he guided Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their third title after a gap of 10 years.
SMAT 2024 Performance
The former KKR man ended the tournament as the fourth-leading run-scorer, amassing 345 runs across nine matches at an impressive average of 49.28, which included a century.
Speaking of the match, opting to bat first, Madhya Pradesh posted 174/8, powered by Rajat Patidar's explosive 81 off 40 balls. Subhranshu Senapati added 23, while Mumbai's Shardul Thakur (4/41) and Royston Dias (2/32) kept the scoring in check.
In response, Mumbai chased down the target in 17.5 overs, thanks to Suryakumar Yadav's composed 48 off 35 and Ajinkya Rahane's 37 off 30. Contributions from the middle order ensured a comfortable finish. Despite Tripuresh Singh (2/34) and Shivam Shukla (1/22) trying to turn the tide, Mumbai proved too strong, claiming the championship with ease.
IPL 2025
Shreyas also became the first IPL captain to be released just one season after leading his team to a title. In the 2025 IPL Mega Auction, he became the second-most expensive player ever in the tournament's history, with Punjab Kings (PBKS) acquiring him for a staggering Rs. 26.75 crore.
Although an official confirmation is still pending, Shreyas is expected to be named captain of PBKS, the 2014 IPL runners-up. This appointment would make him the first Indian cricketer to serve as the permanent captain of three different IPL franchises.
