Nitish Kumar Reddy is India’s newest hero after the young batter scored a hundred in the fourth Test against Australia. India was in trouble when he came to the middle and, despite losing the partners from the other end, didn’t give up. With the help of Washington Sundar, he completed a well-deserving century and took the team’s total to 369.
The right-handed batter batted at No.8 and this has been his position in the current set-up. However, former players Sanjay Manjrekar, Ravi Shastri, and Sunil Gavaskar are demanding a promotion in the batting order.
Manjrekar gave Shastri’s example, who batted at No. 10 in his debut Test against New Zealand but was promoted to open the innings after a few red-ball games.
“I can India can take a leaf out of Ravi Shastri’s story. He batted as No.10 in his debut Test but I saw him opening after a few games. India can follow the same template with Nitish Kumar Reddy, who has been magnificent in the lower order.
“Make him bat at No. 6 and keep Ravindra Jadeja at No.4 and then the remaining four bowlers. Nitish can contribute if he’s given a chance to bat higher in the batting order. I am hoping that he would be given a new batting slot,” he said.
