Pakistan cricket team suffered a big blow in the first hour of the second test against South Africa. On Friday (January 3), opening batsman Sam Ayub was seriously injured at Newlands in Cape Town, after which he was taken off the field in a stretcher. Ayub sprained his ankle and was seen writhing in pain before receiving help from his teammates and the team physio.
The 22-year-old player was later helped to the dressing room and taken to hospital, first in a cart and then in a wheelchair. The incident took place in the seventh over after South Africa batted first when Ayub Ryan was chasing the ball to stop Rickleton's shot. The ball was heading towards the third man boundary and Jamal slid and flicked the ball back in, then Ayub slipped and twisted his ankle.
There is no official statement from the PCB yet, but it does not look very promising for his early return. Ayub will be crucial for Pakistan in the ongoing Tests and upcoming assignments for the national team, including next month's ICC Champions Trophy, where he is likely to be the main opening batsman for the team.
Talking about this match, South African captain Temba Bavuma won the toss and decided to bat first. Following the win in Centurion, Bavuma made three changes to his team with Kwena Mafaka becoming the youngest South African to make a Test debut, replacing Dane Patterson, while left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj, who had recovered from a groin injury, Has replaced all-rounder Corbin Bosch. Vianne Mulder replaced Tony De Zorzi.
