India's cricket leadership trio of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and head coach Gautam Gambhir is set to retain their roles despite the team's disappointing performance in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia.

As per a report by IANS, the BCCI is not planning to make sweeping changes following the series loss, although a review meeting is expected to evaluate the tour.

Gambhir's Role as Head Coach Secure

Gautam Gambhir is likely to remain as head coach, not just for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy but also for India's next major Test challenge: a five-match series in England scheduled for June 2025.

The BCCI, reportedly, does not see Gambhir as the cause of the series defeat and intends to back him.

"Yes, there will be a review meeting but no firing. C'mon, you can't sack a coach for the batters' poor show in one series. Gautam Gambhir will remain the coach, and Virat and Rohit will feature in the England series. The focus is Champions Trophy," an unnamed BCCI official told IANS.

Struggles of Rohit and Kohli

Rohit and Kohli faced criticism for their lacklustre performances in the series. Kohli accumulated 190 runs across five matches, managing only one score above fifty, while Rohit's output was a mere 31 runs from five innings before he opted out of the final Test.

After starting the series with a victory, India faltered, losing three of the next four Tests as Australia clinched the trophy.

When questioned about the future of Rohit and Kohli in the team, Gambhir avoided providing a definitive stance, saying the decision ultimately rests with the players.

"I can't talk about the future of any player. It is up to them as well. But yes, what I can say is that they still have hunger and passion, they are tough people.

Hopefully, they can continue to take Indian cricket forward. But ultimately, as we all know, whatever they plan, it will be in the best interest of Indian cricket," Gambhir remarked.

Gambhir's Strategy Under Fire

Gambhir's strategies during the series drew criticism, particularly his preference for all-rounder-heavy combinations that neither took wickets on favorable surfaces nor delivered with the bat under pressure. His overall record as head coach stands at three wins from ten Tests, with two of those victories coming against Bangladesh at home.

This series defeat also marked India's first failure to reach the World Test Championship Final in three cycles, adding to the scrutiny.

Despite these setbacks, the BCCI appears committed to maintaining stability in leadership as it prepares for upcoming challenges. The England Test series will serve as a significant opportunity for Gambhir, Rohit, and Kohli to regain form and chart a positive course for Indian cricket.
