Delhi: The Australian team has suffered a big setback before the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and the Test series against Sri Lanka. Veteran batsman Steve Smith, who was made the captain for the Sri Lanka tour, got injured during the Big Bash League (BBL) match at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). Smith suffered an elbow injury while throwing in the rain-affected match between Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder.

Smith will meet a specialist doctor in Sydney on January 21, after which the decision on his participation in the series against Sri Lanka will be taken.

It is noteworthy that regular captain Pat Cummins is not playing in this series due to the birth of his second child.

Smith had to undergo surgery in 2019 also due to elbow problem. Apart from this, the team management is also worried about the injury of left arm spinner Matthew Kuhnman. His thumb was broken during the BBL match between Brisbane Heat and Hobart Hurricanes.
