Faf du Plessis is leading Royal Challengers Bengaluru for the third straight season in the Indian Premier League. However, he hasn’t been able to take them to their maiden title. He joined the franchise in 2022 and was named their captain after Virat Kohli stepped down from the leadership role.

Former India player Irfan Pathan blamed Faf for the franchise’s below-par display. In IPL 2024, Bengaluru have lost 6 out of 7 matches so far. The batters haven’t been able to contribute consistently while the bowlers have leaked runs in contests.

“Faf has been with the franchise for a long time and as a captain he is involved in the auction process and retention of players. He deserves all the blame as there is no balance in any department of the game.

“They didn’t buy good players in auction. When you are leading a franchise, it is your duty to add performers to the squad,” Irfan Pathan said on Star Sports.

In their latest game against Sunrisers Hyderabad, the bowlers allowed the rivals to post 287/3, the highest total in IPL history. There were four RCB bowlers, who gave away more than 50 runs, a record in the cash-rich league.

Although RCB reached 262/7 in 20 overs, they never looked like chasing down the world-record target. Dinesh Karthik struck 83 runs but it was not enough. Faf also scored a fifty plus score.
