India is on the verge of achieving a historic milestone as they prepare for the upcoming Champions Trophy under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma. With just two more victories needed to break their own record, India has the chance to solidify their position as the most successful team in the history of the tournament in terms of wins.
The Men in Blue will begin their campaign on February 20, facing Bangladesh at the Dubai International Stadium, followed by a crucial clash against arch-rivals Pakistan, co-hosts of the tournament, on February 22 at the same venue.
With 18 wins already to their name, securing two more will bring India to an unmatched total of 20 victories in Champions Trophy history.Currently, India leads the list of most wins in the tournament, having won it twice. England and Sri Lanka, each with 14 wins, trail behind, though Sri Lanka’s lower success rate, given their 27-match participation, keeps them further back. The West Indies, former Champions Trophy winners, sit in fourth place with 13 victories but have not qualified for this edition. Australia, reigning ODI World Cup champions, are surprisingly in fifth with 12 wins.
Pakistan, despite being co-hosts, are in eighth place with just 11 wins from 23 matches.India heads into the tournament full of confidence, having just completed a dominant whitewash of England in their recent ODI series. After facing criticism over their ODI form, Rohit Sharma and his team sent a strong message, reaffirming their strength and reminding rivals not to underestimate them. Their recent performances have reignited hopes of regaining an ODI title that has eluded them for 12 years.
However, India will be without their pace spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah, who has been ruled out of the tournament due to a lower back injury.
Bumrah’s stellar performances, especially his crucial role in India’s T20 World Cup win, earned him the Player of the Tournament award. His absence will be a significant challenge for the team, but India remains determined to push forward in their quest for Champions Trophy glory.
