Former Australian cricketer Michael Slater collapsed in court on Tuesday after a Queensland magistrate denied him bail. He is facing charges for stalking, assault and choking.
The 54-year-old cricketer was attended by the court staff after he collapsed after hearing the magistrate’s decision, as reported by local media. Slater is facing accusations of domestic violence, assault, and unlawful stalking.
The police alleged that over the last six months, Slater had sent unwanted text messages and made intimidating phone calls.
He is scheduled to appear in court again at the end of May. According to ABC News, the court heard that Slater has mental health conditions that can lead to impulsive and reckless behavior.
The 54-year-old was arrested last Friday on 10 counts of violating a domestic violence protection order. The alleged offenses occurred between December 5 of last year and April 12 of this year.
Slater has a history of domestic violence charges and mental health struggles. In 2022, a Sydney court gave him a two-year community service order after he pleaded guilty to charges of the assault and stalking.
During his cricket career from 1993 to 2004, Michael Slater played in 74 Test matches for Australia, scoring over 5,000 runs and 14 centuries. He also represented Australia in 42 one-day international matches before retiring from the sport in 2004.
