Rohit Sharma has given a thumbs down to Impact Player’s Rule in the Indian Premier League. It allows a team to replace a player from the playing XI with either a batter or bowler sitting in the dugout during their batting or bowling. With the introduction of this rule, the franchises are now playing with 12 players. Teams must submit a list of options from which they will choose one impact player. It has diminished the importance of genuine all-rounders.

Rohit is not a big fan and called it a move to entertain fans. On the Club Prairie Fire podcast, Rohit said it is pushing Indian cricket backwards.

“I am not a fan of this Impact Player rule. You are diminishing the all-rounder’s value. Look at Washington Sundar and Shivam Dube; they haven’t bowled this season, which is unsuitable for us. It was introduced to entertain the fans. Cricket is played with eleven players, and allowing 12 players to be a part of the game is incorrect.

“The teams are using this rule to their advantage and are bringing in a player depending on the situation of the game. I don’t endorse it, as cricket is not played like that. We should stick to how the game is conducted across the globe and refrain from adding a rule that is not there in cricket,” he said.

Rohit is currently playing for Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League 2024. He hit a century in the last game against Chjen nai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium.
