MS Dhoni urged CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad to control the over rate from the start of the LSG chase. However, Ruturaj failed to follow the suggestion, and the team was found to be two-over short at the end of the allotted time. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will fine him INR 12 lakh. Chennai had to place four instead of five fielders outside the third-yard circle in the 18th over, but that hardly mattered as Chennai had no chance to win the contest.

It was the first match in the Indian Premier League’s history in which the captains of both teams were found guilty of an over-rate offence. Lucknow skipper KL Rahul couldn’t complete the overs on time, and LSG were one-over short when the time calculations were taken into consideration.

Meanwhile, Dhoni signaled Ruturaj to tell the bowlers to hurry up as they were taking a lot of time to bowl six balls in the powerplay overs. MSD also informed Gaikwad that Luknow leader KL Rahul was intentionally wasting time before facing a ball. The umpires were informed about KL’s act, and Ruturaj also went to his opposite number to urge him to get ready a bit early.

It was a happy outing for LSG as they defeated Chennai by eight wickets to register their fourth win in the 17th season. Rahul was named the Player of the Match for scoring 82 runs and his brilliant work as a wicketkeeper. His opening partner, Quinton de Kock, amassed 54 runs and added more than 100 runs with his skipper.

Earlier. Ravindra Jadeja’s fifty and MS Dhoni’s cameo helped the defending champions to post 176/6 in 20 overs.
