All ten IPL franchises have started to disband their squads, with a focus on overseas players and support staff after the 18th season was suspended due to tension between India and Pakistan. The BCCI has postponed the games for one week. Following a directive from the Indian government authorities, the cash-rich league was stopped midway.
The BCCI contacted the franchises and broadcasters, who accept the decision. “The BCCI has decided to suspend the rest of the IPL 2025 for one week. Updates on the new schedule and venues of the tournament will be announced in due course after a comprehensive assessment of the situation in consultation with relevant authorities and stakeholders,” BCCI secretary Saikia said in a statement.
The safety of players, officials, and support staff is the foremost priority. Both Indian and overseas players have already started heading home. Teams have been disbanded and the players and support staff are taking the next available flights.
The tension have caused significant unease among the foreign players. A total of 62 overseas players were drafted into the 10 franchises during the mega-auction held last year.
“The players are doing well but of course, there is concern among them,” an IPL team official told PTI.
Cricket Australia is carefully monitoring the ongoing situation. Cricket West Indies also made a similar announcement regarding its players participating in the IPL and PSL.
