Following the ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan on Saturday evening, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly considering the possibility of restarting the 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) “immediately.” However, the final decision depends on a range of factors.
In a conversation with the Indian Express, IPL chairman Arun Dhumal stated that the BCCI is in the process of coordinating with all relevant stakeholders and finalising a schedule for the resumption of the tournament. He also pointed out that the approval of the Indian government is crucial before moving forward.
“A ceasefire has been announced, and now we are looking into the possibility of resuming and completing the IPL. If it’s feasible to restart immediately, we will need to finalize details like venue arrangements and dates. Our next step is to communicate with all involved parties, including team owners, broadcasters, and other stakeholders, to figure out the best way forward. Importantly, we will also have to consult with the government,” Dhumal explained.
BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla confirmed that BCCI officials are set to meet with the IPL governing council on Sunday (May 11) to finalise the revised schedule.
“The war has ended. Given this new situation, the BCCI office bearers, officials, and IPL governing council will hold discussions (Sunday) and make a decision. We will determine the most suitable schedule to finish the tournament,” he told PTI.
The report further highlighted that all IPL franchises and players have been instructed to remain prepared, with the BCCI eager to restart the league at the earliest. Additionally, the BCCI is assessing how quickly foreign players can return for the remaining weeks of the tournament.
A BCCI official told Hindustan Times that IPL 2025 could resume next week. This could put the Australian and South African players in a dilemma, as they will have to prepare for the World Test Championship final starting June 11.
“We may have to add a few more double headers, But following discussions, we could try and allow teams the home advantage as much as possible,” one of the officials said.
