On this Day: MI defeated CSK by 1 run in last ball thriller to lift IPL 2019 title

Mumbai Indians registered a thrilling one-run victory over Chennai Super Kings at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on May 12, 2019 to lift their fourth IPL title.

This was the fourth time that both the teams faced each other in an IPL final and MI defeated CSK for the third time to lift the title. With two runs needed off the last ball, bowled a slower yorker which trapped Shardul Thakur as CSK lost a wicket on the last ball and lost by a close margin.

Batting first, MI posted a total of 149 runs for the loss of eight wickets in their 20 overs. They had a good start as skipper Rohit Sharma (15 off 14) and Quinton de Kock (29 off 17) added 45 runs for the first wicket in 4.5 overs.

However, they kept losing wickets at regular intervals in the middle-overs. After that, Kieron Pollard took charge in the middle overs and remained unbeaten on 41*(25) runs hitting three fours and three sixes. For CSK, Deepak Chahar took three wickets while Imran Tahir and Shardul Thakur scalped two wickets each.

Chasing the winning target, CSK got a flying start as Faf du Plessis and Shane Watson added 33 runs for the first wicket in four overs.

Du Plessis got out after scoring 26 runs off 13 balls. After that, CSK lost momentum in the middle-order and kept losing wickets at regular interval but Shane Watson kept fighting with the bat and took the match to the last over. Jasprit Bumrah shone with the figures of 2/14 in his four overs.

With nine runs needed off the last over, Lasith Malinga conceded only four runs off thee first three balls.

On the fourth delivery, CSK got a major shock as Shane Watson lost his wicket in the form of a run out while taking a second run. The opening batter got out after playing a fighting knock of 80(59) runs hitting eight fours and four sixes. After that, Shardul Thakur took a double on the next delivery and now CSK needed two runs off the last balls to win their fourth title. After that, Malinga came up with a slower one and Thakur ended up getting out by LBW as MI registered a thrilling win and ended up winning their fourth IPL title.
