Discussions about Team India’s new Test captain are in full swing ahead of the five -match Test series, starting on June 20 between India and England. After Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket, the BCCI is now looking for the new leader. Meanwhile, former England cricketer Moin Ali has described Shubman Gill as the next Test captain and praised his captaincy.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Moin Ali said, “I think Shubman Gill can be given the command of the Test team. BCCI may probably want to make Jaspreet Bumrah a captain because he is a good leader and has experience. But his fitness record is a big question, so the board can make a player who played the entire five Tests.”
He further said, “Shubman Gill has captained Gujarat Titans in the IPL, the experience is slightly low but cricketing mind is very good. It will definitely be a tough challenge under England circumstances, but he looks ready for it.”
Shubman Gill captained the T20 team on the Zimbabwe tour in 2024 and India won the series 4–1. Apart from this, in July 2024, he was made vice -captain in both ODI and T20 formats before the Sri Lanka tour. Whenever Rohit Sharma stayed out of the ground, Gill took over the captaincy.
Currently Gill is the captain of Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025 and the team is doing well. GT is at the top of the points table with 16 points by winning 8 out of 11 matches.
After retiring from Rohit Sharma’s Test, now India needs a captain who is young, fit and can take the team forward for a long period. Shubman Gill is seen living on all these parameters. In such a situation, there is a possibility that he may command India’s Test team for the first time on the tour of England.
