Delhi: Ravi Shastri, former head coach of Team India, believes that after Rohit Sharma as a Test captain, BCCI should look at the young players. After Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired from sudden Test cricket, a big challenge has arisen in front of the BCCI. He will have to choose the new captain before the five -match Test series starting against England in June.

Ravi Shastri has clearly said that he does not want to see Jaspreet Bumrah becoming the Test captain of India. He believes that Bumrah has recently returned from a serious back injury, and the pressure of captaincy can affect his game.

Shastri is against making Bumrah captain

Ravi Shastri said, “Bumrah could have been a good option for me after the tour of Australia. But, I do not want him to be captain and then we lose him as a bowler.”

He further said, “He has just returned after a serious injury. So far he has played IPL, where four overs are to be thrown. But now the real test will start when he has to throw 10-15 overs. If there is a captaincy pressure from above, it can affect his fitness.”

Let us know that Bumrah was the vice-captain in the Test team with Rohit Sharma last year and has also captained India in two Tests in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25. However, in a match, he had to leave the field due to a stretch in his back and India lost the Test.

Future captain told Gill-Pant

Ravi Shastri further said that India should give the responsibility of captaincy to a young player for a long time. According to him, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant are the best choice for this role.

He said, “You have to prepare someone. Shubman has impressed a lot. He is 25-26 years old. Give him a chance and time too. Rishabh is also a good option. They are both young and they have the next 10 years.”

Shastri also told that both the players are now taking the experience of captaincy in the IPL, due to which their leadership skills are getting stronger. Shubman Gill is captaining Gujarat Titans, while Pant is the captain of Lucknow Super Giants.
