The Cricket West Indies (CWI) has officially named Roston Chase as the West Indies test captain for the upcoming home series against Australia in June, with Jomel Warrican named as the vice-captain.
The series will be the first of the 2025-27 World Test Champions cycle for both teams. The 33-year-old Chase will be taking over from Kraigg Brathwaite who stepped down from the role in March.
“The appointments were unanimously approved by the CWI Board of Directors during its meeting held today, May 16, 2025, said Cricket West Indies in a statement.
The selection panel consisted of Darren Sammy, Miles Bascombe (Director of Cricket) and Enoch Lewis (Chairman of the Cricket Strategy and Officiating Committee).
Roston Chase has scored 2265 runs at an average of 26.33 with five hundreds and taken 85 wickets with his offspin at 46.00.
“This selection process is one of the most comprehensive and forward-thinking we have undertaken,” CWI President Dr. Kishore Shallow said. “I am deeply impressed by the professionalism, objectivity, and strategic thinking that shaped the final decision. It sets a new benchmark for leadership appointments in West Indies cricket.”
Meanwhile, West Indies head coach Darren Sammy has urged to get behind their new captain. “I fully endorse this appointment. Our new captain has earned the respect of his peers, understands the responsibility that comes with the role, and has shown the leadership qualities we need to take this team forward. I urge fans across the region to rally behind him, we’re building something special.”
Meanwhile Shai Hopethe current ODI and T20I captain, “respectfully declined consideration to focus on his existing leadership roles,” the CWI release further said
