The Indian cricket team has reportedly withdrawn its name from the upcoming 2025 Asia Cup. As per the reports by the Indian Express, the informed the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) headed by PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi that it is withdrawing from the Women's Emerging Teams Asia Cup happening next month in Sri Lanka and won't be participating in the Men's Asia Cup happening in September.
This comes after the recent conflicts between the two neighboring countries and tensions at the border, due to which the BCCI isn't keen on going ahead with the series which an PCB official heads.
"The Indian team can't play in a tournament that is organized by the ACC, whose chief is a Pakistani minister. That's the sentiment of the nation. We have verbally communicated to ACC about our withdrawal from the upcoming Women's Emerging Teams Asia Cup, and our future participation in their events too is on hold. We are in constant touch with the Indian government," the BCCI source quoted.
India-Pakistan match money spinning chance in Asia Cup
BCCI is quite aware that pulling out from the Asia Cup would hurt the financial aspect of the game. Although other participating Asian countries like Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka will earn from the tournament, but the India-Pakistan match is the major attracting for cricketing fans. Besides, Asia Cup rights in 2024 were bagged by Sony Pictures Network India, for the next eight years for $170millon. However, the decision to pull out from the game will result into re-working of the deal.
This isn't the first time Asia Cup or any multinational tournament was impacted due to political crises. In Asia Cup 2023, India refused to play matches since Pakistan was hosting the tournament and played all their matches in Sri Lanka. India weren't keen to cross the border and play on the soil of the neighboring country. Similarly, in 2025 ICC Champions Trophy hosted by Pakistan, India demanded for a hybrid model cricket game, and played all their games in Dubai. India won the cup, and Pakistan again missed the chance.
