Former India fast bowler Varun Aaron shared his views on which players franchises should keep or release for the next IPL season. With the 18th season nearing its end, Punjab Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Gujarat Titans, and Mumbai Indians are battling for the title. Aaron was candid about some players failing to live up to expectations after hefty price tags.
In a video posted on ESPNcricinfo, Aaron suggested that Ravichandran Ashwin, Rachin Ravindra, and Devon Conway should be released. Ashwin, acquired by Chennai Super Kings for Rs 9.75 crore, had an underwhelming season, managing only seven wickets and 33 runs across nine matches. Despite expectations, Conway and Ravindra also underperformed, with Conway managing only 156 runs in six matches and Ravindra scoring 191 from eight appearances.
As for Sunrisers Hyderabad, Aaron felt that Ishan Kishan did not deserve to be retained. Despite two strong innings, a 106* and an unbeaten 94, Kishan finished with 354 runs in 14 matches. Mohammed Shami, purchased for Rs 10 crore, managed to take just six wickets in nine matches at an average of 56.16. Aaron suggested that Sunrisers should focus on developing younger players, like 22-year-old Nitish Kumar Reddy.
Aaron also suggested that Kolkata Knight Riders should retain Ajinkya Rahane, who was their highest scorer with 390 runs in 13 matches. However, he was critical of Venkatesh Iyer, who struggled to meet expectations with just 142 runs at an average of 20.28.
For Lucknow Super Giants, Aaron advised releasing key players like Mayank Yadav, who had a poor season after being retained for Rs 11 crore following an injury. Ravi Bishnoi, who failed to impress with just nine wickets in 11 matches, was another player Aaron felt should be let go.
