Shubman Gill is the new Test captain, while Rishabh Pant is his deputy. The two have been given new responsibilities starting from the Test tour of England. With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s retirement from the longest format, the selectors have picked a young side for five Test matches. Jasprit Bumrah, who led India in three Tests and was also a vice-captain during Rohit’s tenure, was not considered for the leadership role because of his injury-prone body and workload management. He is likely to play three games against the Ben Stokes-led team.

Shardul Thakur, who has been recalled to the Test side for the important Test assignment, gave his verdict on Gill and Pant. Thakur was a part of the Lucknow Super Giants squad in the Indian Premier League 2025 and watched Pant’s captaincy from close quarters. He mentioned that Gill and Rishabh are the future of India.

“They are big players and the future of India. Shubman Gill is calm and composed and enjoys whenever he is in the mood, but whenever he practices or plays a match, he is very serious about his game,” he told Rev Sportz.

“On the other hand, Rishabh Pant likes to enjoy, and that is his USP. He cracks jokes with rival players, but he also manages to score runs. He is a different character. It is good to play with him and credit him for scoring runs in big matches. Shubman Gill has also scored runs in big games. It is a rare talent, and when you see this quality in a young player, you feel happy from the inside. It shows India’s future is bright,” he added.
