International Cricket will see the birth of a new team with a new entity 'GB Cricket' set to be formulated ahead of the 2028 Lon Angeles Olympics, where the sport will return to the quadrennial event after a gap of 128 years in the T20 format.
As per a report by ESPNcricinfo, this team will represent Great Britian (GB) in the Olympic games. For those unversed, while GB compete as one nation in the Olympics, England (and Wales), Scotland, and Ireland compete as separate countries and have different cricket boards which are registered with the International Cricket Council (ICC). The 'GB Cricket' team will also be the defending champions as GB won the Gold Medal in cricket's sole appearance at the competition in the 1900 games in Paris. Only two teams participated in the event with Britian facing France in a Test match. The host nation settled for the silver medal. The published information reveals that the activities of 'GB Cricket' will be overseen by a new board which will consist of executive and non-executive representatives from the England Cricket Board (ECB) and Cricket Scotland (CS). The team will be formed from players of all three countries. Although it is worth noting that Cricket Ireland represents players from both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The report has revealed that a special MOU will be signed to allow Northern Ireland players to play in the Olympics for 'GB Cricket.' The same report has stated that 'GB Cricket' will be formulated officially in the next few months after getting recognition from the International Cricket Council (ICC) and British Olympic Association (BOA) before becoming a full member of the National Olympic Assocation (NOA).Although the qualification criteria is yet to be announced by the ICC, the England Cricket Team will be used as the side that fights for the spot in the Olympics as 'GB Cricket' will only come together during the Olympics. Both the men's and women's tournaments at the 2028 Olympics will be a six-team event and will be played at the Fairgrounds in Pomona, South California, which is 50 km away from LA.
