The Women Emerging Team Asia Cup, starting from June 6 in Sri Lanka, has now been postponed indefinitely due to adverse weather conditions and health safety concerns. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) made a formal announcement on Monday (2 June).
Shammi Silva, president of Sri Lanka Cricket, sent a letter to the ACC requesting to postpone the tournament. In the letter, he cited adverse weather conditions and the increasing concerns of the spreading of Chikungunya in Sri Lanka as the cause of adjournment.
Asian Cricket Council President Mohsin Naqvi said, “ACC is fully committed to women cricketers to improve their skills and provide opportunities to further competition at the highest level. We consider this tournament to be important to shape the future of women’s cricket in Asia, and we will work actively to resolve the event as soon as possible.”
The ACC has also said that new dates of the tournament will be announced in the appointed time and they are working to organize the incident as soon as possible, along with understanding the reasons behind this decision.
This adjournment is an unfortunate situation for young women cricketers, but health and safety have been given top priority. The ACC plans that this tournament will be held in a suitable and safe environment in the future.
We all hope that soon we will see this tournament with a new date.
