Bengaluru police have arrested RCB marketing head, Nikhil Sosale, in connection with the Chinnaswamy Stadium Stampede, which claimed 11 lives on June 04.
The RCB secured their maiden IPL title 18 years after the tournament’s inception. To celebrate the title win, the fans in large numbers were involved in a bus parade, which led to the disaster.
The report added that the head of marketing and revenue for RCB at Diageo India was detained at Bengaluru airport while attempting to fly to Mumbai.
According to the report, police have also detained three staff members of DNA Entertainment Networks Pvt.
Ltd., the event management company responsible for organising the RCB victory celebrations.Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah directed the arrest of key representatives from the RCB team, the event management company DNA Entertainment Private Limited and the Karnataka State of Cricket Association (KSCA).
This came shortly after an FIR was filed against them on multiple charges including culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Siddarmaiah also suspended Bengaluru Police Commisioner B Dayananda along with several other senior police officials.
Karnataka’s government has decided to suspend multiple senior police officers including Bengaluru’s police commisioner in the aftermath of the deadly stampede near Chinnaswamy Stadium has drawn sharp criticism from within the police fraternity.
Former Bengaluru Police Commissioner and BJP leader Bhaskar Rao called the move “the darkest day in the history of Karnataka Police,” lashing out at the Congress-led governmentfor acting in ‘panic mode’.
In a scathing post on X, Rao accused Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar of using the police as scapegoats to deflect attention from administrative failures.
“The suspension of the Bengaluru City Police Commissioner is the darkest day in the history of Karnataka Police. The officers worked tirelessly all night to keep the city safe, and their reward is suspension,” he wrote.
The celebration programme was supposedly shortened, with RCB releasing a statement acknowleding the stampede death several hours after the incident on Wednesday.
Police said the arrests were made during an overnight operation carried out by the Central Crime branch under the leadership of Deputy Commisioner of Police Akshay. The accused are likely to be handed over the crime Investigation Department today.
