Delhi: Rob Walter has been appointed as the new head coach of New Zealand’s men’s cricket team.
He will replace the Gary Stead and will take command of the team in all three formats (Test, ODI and T20).Walter was the coach of South Africa ODI and T20 teams from January 2023 to April 2024. Earlier, he has coached the Otago Province of New Zealand and the Central Districts Association (CDA).
In their coaching, South Africa made it to the semi -finals of the 2023 ODI World Cup and the recently held Champions Trophy, while the team reached the final in the T20 World Cup last year.
Since the Gary Stead 2018, the coach of all three formats of the New Zealand team was so far. He announced in March that he would withdraw from limited overs format, but will remain the test coach.
However, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) made it clear that he wants a coach who can lead the team in all three formats.Walter said on his appointment, “It is a great opportunity to work with such talented players and support staff. This time is full of global tournaments and big bilateral series. I am eagerly waiting for this challenge. It is exciting, challenging and the opportunity is very big.”
NZC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Scott Veenic said, “Rob is a world class coach whose record is excellent.
His success in New Zealand’s domestic cricket and recently with South Africa on the global stage makes him an ideal coach of black caps.”Rob Walter will officially handle the New Zealand team before the Zimbabwe tour. The tour will begin with Zimbabwe and a T20 tri -series with South Africa, after which New Zealand will play two Tests against Zimbabwe.
