Delhi: The Test series of India and England starting on June 20 will now be played under a new name. According to the BBC report, this series will now be called “Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy”.

This trophy is named after India’s great batsman Sachin Tendulkar and England veteran bowler James Anderson. Tendulkar has scored 15,921 runs in 200 Tests played from 1989 to 2013. At the same time, Anderson has taken 704 wickets in 188 Tests. Anderson retired from cricket in 2024.

Earlier series was known as Pataudi Trophy

Earlier, the Indo-England Test series played in England since 2007 was known as the Pataudi Trophy. The trophy was started in memory of the completion of 75 years of the first Test match between India and England. At the same time, this series played in India is called Anthony de Melo Trophy, which is named after the former president of BCCI.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar expressed displeasure over the decision to remove the Pataudi Trophy. He wrote in an article in Sportstar, “It is shocking to ‘retire’ the ECB’s Pataudi Trophy. This is the first time when the trophy of a player’s name has been removed. This ignores the contribution of the Pataudi family to cricket.”

Gavaskar further said that if an Indian player has been proposed to keep a trophy in the name of an Indian player, then he should be politely refused. “Otherwise it will be the same, now it happened with the Pataudi Trophy.”

On this issue, the wife and actress Sharmila Tagore, wife and actress of the late Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, also expressed grief. He said in an interview a few months ago, “ECB had sent a letter to Saif that the Pataudi Trophy is being retired. What does BCCI do on it is completely his decision.”

However, no official announcement has been made on this issue by BCCI or ECB.
