Former Australia captain Michael Clarke believes there’s a real possibility Virat Kohli could return to Test cricket—if India suffers a heavy defeat in the upcoming Test series against England. Kohli recently announced his retirement from the red-ball format after a stellar career spanning 123 matches, during which he scored 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries.

India will take on England in a five-match Test series starting June 20, without two of their biggest stars—Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma—both of whom have retired from Test cricket.

Their absence marks the beginning of a new era for Indian cricket.

Just weeks ago, Kohli led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to their first-ever IPL title and had, during the celebrations, reiterated his love for Test cricket, calling it the “pinnacle of the game.” That statement has fueled speculation that his decision to retire might not be permanent.

Speaking on the Beyond23 Cricket podcast, Michael Clarke said:

“If India lose this series 0-5 or face a heavy defeat, I think the fans, selectors, and captain will want Kohli back in the team.

He still loves Test cricket—his words show that. If he’s passionate and the team needs him, I wouldn't be surprised if he returns.”

Clarke also reflected on the loss of Rohit Sharma, saying:

“Rohit was a fantastic Test captain. Any team would miss a leader like him.”

Clarke also offered condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the tragic stampede during RCB’s victory celebrations in Bengaluru.

“It’s heartbreaking to see lives lost during what should be a celebration.

Hopefully, better planning ensures this never happens again. Players should celebrate safely with fans, even if that means inside a stadium,” he said.
