The Secretary of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), A Shankar, and Treasurer, ES Jairam, resigned on Saturday, following the tragic stampede that led to the loss of 11 lives at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. This occurred during a felicitation event for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) after their IPL 2025 win on Tuesday.
Their resignation came shortly after KSCA and RCB approached the Karnataka High Court regarding the First Information Reports (FIRs) filed in relation to the stampede.
“We would like to inform that due to the unexpected and unfortunate events that have occurred over the past two days, and despite our limited involvement, we feel a moral responsibility to announce that we have tendered our resignation from the positions of Secretary and Treasurer of the Karnataka State Cricket Association. Our resignation was submitted through a letter dated 06.06.2025 to the President of the Karnataka State Cricket Association.”
On Thursday, the Karnataka High Court took suo motu notice of the incident after a briefing from Advocate General Shashikiran Shetty. The court directed the state to submit a status report by June 10 and granted interim protection from arrest to senior KSCA officials, provided they cooperate with the investigation.
The Bengaluru police arrested four individuals on Friday, including RCB’s marketing head, Nikhil Sosale, as they tried to board a flight at Kempegowda International Airport. Sosale, along with Sunil Mathew, Sumanth, and Kiran Kumar from DNA Entertainment Private Limited, was remanded in judicial custody for 14 days.
Sosale’s legal team argued that his arrest was politically motivated and ordered by the Chief Minister without a thorough investigation. The court rejected the request for interim relief and decided to hear further arguments from the state.
KSCA clarified in its petition that its role was limited to renting the stadium and facilitating government approvals, while RCB, as the event organiser, was in charge of ticketing and crowd control, alongside law enforcement.
