Josh Hazlewood had a standout IPL 2025 season, helping Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) secure their maiden title. The Australian fast bowler took 22 wickets, securing the third spot on the list of top wicket-takers, trailing Prasidh Krishna of Gujarat Titans and Noor Ahmad of Chennai Super Kings. His impressive performance earned him the affectionate nickname ‘HazleGod,’ which has become popular in India.
Ahead of the World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa at Lord’s on June 11, Hazlewood was asked about his new name. The 34-year-old expressed his enjoyment of being called ‘HazleGod,’ but remarked that it likely won’t stick in Australia.
During the IPL, Hazlewood suffered a shoulder injury but returned after the tournament was temporarily suspended due to the India-Pakistan situation. He went through rehabilitation in Australia. He made an immediate impact, taking three wickets in Qualifier 1 against Punjab Kings.
“Yeah, hopefully, it fades away soon. It’s nice to hear it around the grounds in India, but I don’t think it’ll catch on in Australia,” Hazlewood said in a video shared on ICC’s official Instagram.
Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood’s partner-in-crime, chuckled at the new nickname, expressing his hope that it lasts. He also mentioned that Hazlewood has had an excellent couple of months recently.
“Hopefully, it sticks, but I don’t think he’s too fond of it. He had an amazing few months in India and returned home with plenty of cash. I’m looking forward to seeing him in action at Lord’s,” Starc remarked.
