The Indian team management faces a significant challenge in managing Jasprit Bumrah’s workload ahead of the Test series against England, which begins on June 20. According to chief selector Ajit Agarkar, Bumrah is unlikely to play in all five matches due to specific instructions from the BCCI medical team and physiotherapists. This leaves head coach Gautam Gambhir with the difficult task of identifying three matches for the speedster.
Sourav Ganguly, the ex-captain of India, has suggested a plan to help India make the most of Bumrah’s contribution throughout the series. In a conversation with RevSportz, Ganguly expressed his hope that Bumrah will stay fit throughout the series. While he believes it may be necessary to rest Bumrah for the second game, he stressed that Bumrah should definitely play in the final two matches.
“I am hopeful that Bumrah maintains his fitness in all the five Test matches. Even if that means giving him a rest after the second Test, and then bringing him back for the fourth and fifth, a fully fit Bumrah will be crucial,” he said.
Ganguly also provided advice to Shubman Gill, the new Test captain, on how to manage Bumrah’s availability during the series. He recommended that Gambhir closely monitor the situation and guide the captain as needed.
“Shubman Gill must recognise the importance of not overworking Bumrah. He should be used as a wicket-taker, with short spells to keep him fresh for the entire series. It’s also essential that others step up, like young Arshdeep Singh and Mohammed Siraj, who possess great fitness and skill. Bumrah should be utilised as a key wicket-taker. He needs to understand this, and I’m confident Gautam (Gambhir) and the senior players will provide the right guidance,” Ganguly added.
