India’s T20I captain and prominent batter, Suryakumar Yadav, has flown to London to consult with a specialist about a sports hernia injury that has been affecting him for a while. The 34-year-old is likely to undergo additional tests to assess whether surgery will be required.
After an intense three months of continuous cricket, which included a standout IPL 2025 campaign with Mumbai Indians and his involvement in the Mumbai T20 League, Suryakumar is now concentrating on his recovery.
“Surya is dealing with a sports hernia on the lower right side of his abdomen. He has travelled to the UK for a consultation, and if needed, he may undergo surgery,” a source close to the cricketer told PTI.
“With no T20 cricket scheduled before August-September, Surya felt this was the ideal time to address his injury and allow enough time for recovery at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru,” the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) source said.
The Indian Test team is gearing up for their five-match series against England, starting June 20 at Headingley. However, Suryakumar is not included in the red-ball squad, giving him a chance to focus on his fitness.
After a stellar IPL season in which he accumulated 700 runs for Mumbai Indians, he played in domestic T20 matches.
As India’s next T20I series is set for August in Bangladesh, Suryakumar has sufficient time to focus on his recovery. However, if surgery is required, it may push back his return to the field.
