The Western Australia off-spinner Corey Rocchiccioli has signed a short-term deal to play for Warwickshire in the County Championship.
He will be available for four Championship games over the next six weeks and said he ‘jumped at the chance’ to play overseas during the Australian winter.
Corey Rocchiccioli has been under Australia’s selectors’ radar, picking him up for Australia A teams to face India A and the England Lions.
He is one of several potential successors to Nathan Lyon, along with Matthew Kuhnemann and Todd Murphy who had to deal with Gloucestershire for the same block of Championship fixtures.
“I’m really excited to play at a prestigious club like Warwickshire. I jumped at the chance to play when Westy and Davo (captain Alex Davies) rang me. I’m really excited to learn and grow in English conditions and hopefully contribute to some strong wins along the way,” said Corey Rocchiccioli.
“We are very excited about welcoming Corey into our squad through June and July,” said Warwickshire’s head coach, Ian Westwood.
“He is a proven performer in Sheffield Shield cricket, and with his experience of the Kookaburra ball, we know he will make an impact for us,” concluded Ian Westwood.
Corey Rocchiccioli has taken 114 Wickets in 34 FC games for his home state Western Australia and finished the recent Sheffield Shield season as the third highest wicket-taker with 38, including a career-best 7/52 against Queensland in February.
Meanwhile Northamptonshire signed Tim Robinson has also joined on a short-term deal. The 23 year old Robinson will be available for two Championship matches and four Blast fixtures and replaces Matthew Breetzke after his selection for South Africa’s squad to face Zimbabwe.
Warwickshire are the second county to bring in an overseas player on a short term deal after Hampshire signed Indian batter Tilak Varma to cover the same block of four matches.
Warwickshire are currently fourth in Division One of the County Championship after the first seven matches, behind Nottinghamshire.
