In the opening Test of the five-match series between India and England at Headingley, KL Rahul continued his consistent form. After a valuable 42-run knock in the first innings, Rahul brought up a well-compiled half-century in the second innings, reinforcing his importance in India's batting lineup.
Rahul reached his fifty in the first session of Day 4 and remained unbeaten on 60 off 128 balls at lunch, with 8 boundaries to his name.
With this knock, he entered an elite club, becoming the second Indian opener with the most 50+ scores in Test cricket across seven different countries.
He now has nine 50+ scores, equaling Virender Sehwag and Murali Vijay. The only player ahead of them is Sunil Gavaskar, who recorded 19 such scores in 57 innings.
While Rahul stood firm, others failed to capitalize. Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sai Sudharsan, and Shubman Gill – who all impressed in the first innings – faltered in the second. Jaiswal scored just 4, Gill managed 8, and Sudharsan added 30.
Rahul’s gritty innings has given India stability as they aim to set a formidable target for England on a competitive Headingley surface.
