BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) — Shubman Gill added a second-innings century to his double hundred in the first innings as India posted 427/6 before the skipper announced declaration. Overall, the visitors took their lead to 607 in the second test on Saturday.

India have more than a day to bowl out England at Edgbaston to square the five-match series at 1-1.

Gill made 269 in India’s first-innings 587 and accumulated 161 in the second essay. He managed 430 runs in the ongoing game and broke India’s record — set by Sunil Gavaskar against West Indies in 1971 (344 runs) — for the most runs in a single test match.

Gill became just the second Indian, after Gavaskar (124 and 220) in that Windies match in ’71, to score a double-hundred and a hundred in the same test.

The current England team captained by Ben Stokes relishes its big run chases, but this one surely is beyond them and batting out for a draw seems to be the only play now.

Ravindra Jadeja posted an unbeaten 69 runs.
