Team India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, has expressed his backing for the BCCI’s new family regulation, which restricts the duration of visits during international tournaments. This policy was put in place following India’s 1-3 loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, capping family stays at 14 days for tours of 45 days or more, and seven days for shorter trips.

The decision by the BCCI is part of a broader set of guidelines aimed at ensuring players remain focused during their international commitments. The move has sparked some controversy, with former captain Virat Kohli voicing his disagreement. Kohli had previously mentioned that he prefers not to return to his hotel room and be alone without his family.

During a candid conversation with Cheteshwar Pujara, Gambhir elaborated on his viewpoint, stating that the main objective for players should be to represent their country, rather than seeing the tour as a break.

“Families matter, but you’re here for a reason. This isn’t a holiday and there’s a bigger purpose you are playing for. Very few people get the chance to make their country proud like you do. So, while I’m not opposed to having families with us, understand the significance of the opportunity you’re given,” Gambhir said.

While acknowledging the value of family support, the Indian coach emphasized that the ultimate priority should always be to fulfil the responsibility to the nation.

“Having families around is important, but if your main focus is on making our country proud and you understand the bigger role you play, then your commitment to that goal should come first. When you’re fully dedicated to that cause, everything else falls into place. For me, that cause and goal will always be more important than anything else,” Gambhir added.
