Shamar Joseph remains at the top of his game as far as Test cricket is concerned, as he broke a 36-year-old record on his way to his 50th Test wicket. Starting the third Day’s play in the third and final Test of the three-match series against Australia in Jamaica on July 15 (Monday).

Shamar cleaned up Cameron Green on the very first ball of the day and reached the milestone, picking up his seventh wicket in the match and 50th of his Test career, in only his 11th Test.

The Guyanese pacer, on his way to the milestone, also became the joint fourth-fastest bowler in West Indies cricket history to reach 50 Test wickets. Before today, Alfred Valentine (8), Andy Roberts (9), Colin Croft (9) and Joel Garner (10) had picked up 50 scalps in fewer Tests before Shamar.

While Shamar is the fourth fastest, some other West Indians have picked up 50 wickets in 11 Tests.

The list includes off-spinners Sonny Ramadhin (1950), Shane Shillingford (2013) and speedster turned one of the finest commentators Ian Bishop (1989).

Thus, Shamar broke a 36-year-old West Indian record by becoming the first pacer since 1989 to pick 50 wickets in 11 or fewer Tests.

As for the match, at the time of writing this, Australia were bowled out for 121 in their second innings, setting a target of 204 runs for West Indies to win the Test.

However, the Windies lost their first two wickets in the first over of their second innings itself, with both the wickets being picked up by Mitchell Starc, who is playing his 100th Test.
