After winning the Lord’s Test, two points were deducted due to a slow over speed on England. The ICC also imposed a fine of 10 percent of the match fees. Former captain Michael Vaughan expressed displeasure over punishing England and has questioned the ICC’s decision.
Delhi: England defeated India by 22 runs in the third Test to take a 2–1 lead in the five-match series. The match was played at Lord’s. Now the fourth Test will be played in Manchester from 23 July. But, after this victory at Lord’s, England has also suffered a major setback from the ICC.
The ICC has cut two World Test Championship points due to a slow over speed on the England team. Also, the team has been fined 10 percent of the match fees. Former captain Michael Vaughan has objected to this punishment of England. He said that the over rate of both teams was bad, then why only England was punished.
Michael Vaughan tweeted and wrote, “To be honest, the over rate of both teams in Lord’s Test was bad. I do not understand why only one team was punished.”
In a statement issued by the ICC, it was told that the match referee Richie Richardson took this action. England’s team was able to throw two overs less in the stipulated time. According to the rule, five percent of the match fees of the players are deducted when every over is low and one digit is also less than the World Test Championship Table.
Under this rule, two points of England have been cut. Due to this, the total points of the team decreased from 24 to 22. With this, their point percentage has also come down from 66.67 to 61.11. Sri Lanka benefited from this change, which has now reached second place above England with 66.67 percent marks.
India is still fourth in the points table of the World Test Championship. The ICC has made it clear that the fine has been imposed under Article 16.11.2 of Sports Conditions of the World Test Championship and Section 2.22 of the Code of Conduct.
