A solid fifty from Mitchell Owen and Cameron Green has clinched a three-wicket victory for Australia in the first T20I against the West Indies at Kingston.
Owen etched his name in the history of books during his T20I debut, putting in a record-breaking performance, picking a wicket and scoring a half-century.
Along with Dwarshius’ four fer, the duos batting display has helped Australia to chase 190 run target with 7 balls to spare. The Aussies took 1-0 lead in the T20I series of Australia’s tour of West Indies 2025.
Batting first, Bradon King and Shai Hoped opened the innings while Dwarshius opened the bowling attack.
After King’s dismissal for 18 runs, Roston Chase joined Hope to knock fifties making a 90-run partnership for the second wicket.
Dwarshius picked his first wicket by dismissing chase for 60 runs. With the dismissal of Hope for 55 runs by Owen, West Indies batting order crumbled as the batters failed to make a partnership with Hetmyer.
Shimron Hetmyer made 38 runs before being dismissed by Nathan Ellis. Powell and Russell went out for single digit scores while Rutherford and Jason Holder got dismissed for duck which restricted West Indies to 189 runs in their 20 over innings.
With Dwarshius picking four wickets, Abbott, Cooper Connolly, Nathan Ellis and Mitchell Owen picked one wicket each.
In the pursuit of chasing 190 run target, Mitchell Marsh and Jake Fraser-McGurk opened the innings while Akeal Hosein opened the bowling attack.
With the dimissal of Jake Fraser-McGurk for 2 runs by Holder, Marsh lost his wicket for 24 runs to Alzarri Joseph as the side lost two wickets within the powerplay.
Josh Inglis and Glenn Maxwell lost their wickets for 18 and 11 respectively to Hosein and Motie.
However, Cameron Green and Mitchell Owen came for rescue, went on to score 51 and 50 before being dismissed by Motie and Joseph.
With Cooper Connolly’ 13 runs and Dwarshius and Sean Abbott’s contributions, Australia chased the target in the last ball of the 19th over.
Despite Jason Holder, Alzarri Joseph and Gudakesh Motie picked two wickets each, they failed to defend the target.
Mitchell Owen was named as the Player of the Match. Speaking at the post match conference, Owen said, (on debut) Happy to have the win, nice to contribute. Nice to join those great names (of David Warner and Ricky Ponting – players who got 50s on T20I debut).
(ion his batting) For me, it was about trying to play positively and put the pressure back on the bowlers. Great to bat with Greeny, kept me nice and calm. First time batting with him.
(On batting in the middle order) Not too much changed, I wanted to go out and hit a six first, swing hard and work it from there.
