Despite being overlooked for the ongoing Test series between England and Indiatalented batter Sarfaraz khan has turned heads with a remarkable transformation off the field. The 27-year-old batter, known for his consistent performances in domestic cricket, has significantly trimmed down, sharing his new lean look on social media.
His weight loss and commitment to fitness come at a crucial time when national selection has eluded him, despite strong performances. Sarfaraz, who has 4685 runs in 55 first-class matches at an impressive average of 65.98, including 16 centuries, was part of the India A setup before the England tour. He even scored a valiant 92 against England Lions but failed to find a place in the Test squad. His last appearance for India came in a home Test against New Zealand earlier this year. Though he travelled with the team for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in Australiahe didn’t feature in any game.
Former England batter Kevin Pietersen was quick to acknowledge Sarfaraz’s efforts, calling his fitness transformation commendable. Pietersen’s remark not only praised Sarfaraz but also served as advice to Prithvi Shawwho has struggled with fitness and has been sidelined from the national setup. Shaw, once hailed as a future star of Indian cricket, has been under scrutiny for his lack of fitness, which has reportedly played a role in his exclusion from BCCI’s plans.
Reacting to the viral photo shared by Sarfaraz, Pietersen posted on X (formerly Twitter): “Outstanding effort, young man! Huge congrats and I’m sure it’s going to lead to better and more consistent performances on the field. I love the time you’ve spent reorganising your priorities! LFG! Can someone show Prithvi this please? It can be done! Strong body, strong mind!”
India face a critical challenge in the fourth Test of the five-match series against England at Old Trafford, Manchester. Currently trailing 2-1, India must win this match to keep their hopes alive in the series.
The series began with a defeat at Headingley, followed by a strong comeback win at Edgbaston. However, the momentum slipped again at Lord’s, where England edged out India in a nail-biting contest to take the lead. With only two Tests remaining, the Shubman Gill-led side must bring their best game to the field to level the series.
All eyes will be on team selection and whether India considers reshuffling their playing XI. Though Sarfaraz is not in the current squad, his renewed commitment and visible transformation might open doors for future opportunities, especially if India continues to seek stability in the middle order.
